High Octane captures the split second where instinct, training, and partnership collide into pure motion. This drawing focuses on the explosive athleticism of a Border Collie mid-flight during an agility run — a moment where gravity, speed, and intention are all suspended at once.

When I created this graphite pencil drawing, I was deeply immersed in the world of dog agility with my Rottweilers. I was surrounded daily by the intensity, precision, and emotional connection required between dog and handler. I wanted to translate that lived experience into a single frozen moment — the power in the rear drive, the focus in the eyes, the commitment to the obstacle, and the absolute thrill of working.

Rendered in black and white, the drawing strips away distraction and highlights form, muscle, and motion. It reflects not just physical performance, but the mental electricity that high-drive working dogs bring to sport and partnership.

High Octane was entered into the juried Art Show at the Dog Show in 2013, where it received Best Depiction of a Performance Dog — an honor that reinforced how deeply the performance dog community understands and recognizes authentic movement and drive.

This piece is a tribute to performance dogs, to the handlers who learn to move with them, and to the unspoken communication that exists when both are operating at full speed.
